Roche Switzerland bridges the gap between pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. Key research and development functions are based here. For our long-standing client, Roche Diagnostics International AG in Rotkreuz, we are looking for a
Sensor Development Engineer
Background:
The team focuses on measuring parameters of gases (O2 & CO2), electrolytes (pH, Na+, K+, Ca2+ & Cl-), and metabolites (Glucose & Lactate) in whole blood, utilizing electrochemical, optical, and enzymatic measuring principles. You will be crucial in both developing new methods based on theoretical foundations and providing technical expertise to support series production and existing on-market products.
Your Opportunity:
Join the Technical Project Support Team, part of the Blood Gas Electrolytes (BGE) Sensor Development SubChapter, to develop, characterize, and optimize electrochemical sensors for medical devices in the area of IVD diagnostics. They are looking for a team-oriented, inquisitive, and self-reliant person to help them deliver critical instruments to hospitals and testing laboratories.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Address product care topics within our in-house Sensor Production, including handling production issues (deviations, root cause & risk analysis) and product care topics (customer complaint investigations, material, and design changes).
- Implement changes derived from fundamental principles, experimental data, and simulation models, and help integrate them into new and existing products.
- Independently plan, execute, evaluate results, and document your work across development, product care, and operations support.
- Test and analyze sensor designs in the lab using various characterization methods (e.g., electrochemical analysis methods, IR, SEM, Rheometer & etc.).
- Work independently within a multidisciplinary team by planning projects/work packages, conducting investigations, and generating required data and documentation.
- Take responsibility for equipment and develop new tools, methods, and processes to evaluate our sensors.
- Support the team with scientific expertise and practical knowledge to understand and solve technical questions arising in the development and production of complex electrochemical sensors and electrodes.
- Interact across the business with quality, operation, V&V, and business to support and coordinate design and material changes.
- Support sensor development activities in new development projects, depending on project needs and product care situation.
Must Haves:
- Higher technical education (master's from FH/University/ETH) in chemistry/physics/material science /(electrical) engineering or Bachelor's degree with more than 3 years of industry experience
- Understanding of materials (glasses, metals, polymers, and other chemicals) and their interactions with sensors and biological samples
- Interest and dedication to study, test, and improve electrochemical/optical (bio)sensors and learn to understand their behavior and associated material properties
- Experience working in a highly regulated environment • Experience with the development of new characterization methods and the implementation of them in test methods, setups, or tools
- Ability to acquire, process, and analyze data with appropriate tools (Matlab, Excel, MiniTab, R, Python)
- Experience in working in and contributing to multidisciplinary development from varied fields with diverse backgrounds
- Ability to document results at a high technical level and actively report data, results, ideas, and achievements
- Fluent communication in English is required
Nice to Haves:
- Experience in different electrochemical methods (potentiometry, impedance spectroscopy, etc) is of advantage, as well as broader physical and chemical analysis, with motivation to use and improve these skills in the laboratory
- German skills
- First working experience in a producing industry is an advantage
